What kind of fruit looks like lemon with a couple dozen spikes sticking out of he fruit?

It looked like a lemon tree, but the fruits had these 2" spikes sticking out all over! In a wilderness area in S CA. Riverside area.

??????? Talk about WEIRD!

I was afraid to taste it.

Look at this picture. What do you think? I think this is what you described. But it is usually found in SE Asia, but SC has a similar climate. It is known as "The King of Fruits". The insides are edible in different stages of ripeness. There are over 30 different types of Durio.

Were you anywhere near UC Riverside? The agricultural department there does a LOT of hybridization--citrus especially.
