The lemon law in CA only applies if you buy a car from a used dealer with an express warranty and not an individual seller. If you buy a used car "as is" then the lemon law doesn't apply either.

Lemon laws apply to brand new vehicles which have never belonged to anyone else and came straight from the factory with all sorts of problems. When you buy a used car it is as-is, buyer beware, so you should always have a mechanic, or at least someone with basic automotive knowledge, check the car out before the purchase.
Well Lemon Law don't apply here since it is meant for people who buy cars from used car agencies, but you can always sue the guy for selling you a vehicle that didn't work properly.
The Lemon Law applies to having the same repair repeated three times without resolution.
You bought a 15 year old car - from a private person - which makes it an as is sale. You should have had the car inspected by a mechanic for problems before purchasing it.
You have no recourse against the seller at this point.
Finally - illegible means unreadable. It's the incorrect word for the situation you have described.
